ERL Prioritises Partnerships And User Improvements To Support Recovery As It Enters 20th Year of Service

Kuala Lumpur, 26th January 2022 – Express Rail Link Sdn Bhd (ERL) will prioritise collaborations with strategic partners and focus on customer experience improvements as it enters its 20th year of service. April 2022 will mark twenty years since ERL first launched the KLIA Ekspres service from KL Sentral Station to KLIA. Its train ridership has gradually increased month-on-month since the start of Phase 4 of the National Recovery Plan as more people returned to work and travelled for domestic holidays.

Noormah Mohd Noor, Chief Executive Officer of ERL said, “Like many travel-related businesses, ERL has been severely affected by the pandemic. Thankfully, our ridership increased by 59% year-on-year in the last quarter of 2021 so we are hopeful that the cost-saving measures taken so far and new initiatives in the pipeline will put us back on track to recovery this year.”

To accelerate its ridership recovery, ERL will continue its “Go Cashless” drive with more attractive offers this year in partnerships with TNG Digital Sdn Bhd (TNGD), ShopeePay and Bank Islam.

Go Cashless on Public Transport Campaign
In celebration of its 20 years of service this year, ERL is offering a greater discount of 20% (increased from 15% during last year’s promotions) for customers who use Touch ‘n Go eWallet or Bank Islam cards for their cashless transactions.

“We saw a steady growth of cashless transactions especially with the introduction of e-Wallets on our platform since 2016 and the relaunch of our all-new KLIA Ekspres app last year. Today, almost 60% of our ticketing transactions are cashless, a significant jump from 39% five years ago. We are really pleased to have our long-term partners, TNG Digital and Bank Islam, continuing their collaborations with us and to also welcome ShopeePay onboard as we rebuild from the impact of the pandemic,” added Noormah.

Sales Distribution Expansion to Provide Greater Convenience to Travellers
This year will also see ERL reviving its B2B collaborations starting with a Mini Program on the Touch ‘n Go eWallet app. KLIA Ekspres and KLIA Transit tickets will be offered on the new platform by end of January 2022 in time for the Chinese New Year holiday travel.

ERL is also expecting to soon relaunch train ticket sales on Malaysia Airlines’ flight booking platform as well as its travel and lifestyle digital platform, Journify, as the country gears up for the opening of its international borders this year.

Service Improvements
ERL is undertaking several initiatives to improve its service and customer experience in the coming months. These include train seat refurbishment, KLIA Ekspres app enhancements, allowing cyclists to take non-foldable bikes onboard the train (currently, only foldable bikes are allowed) on the weekends and increasing train frequency as passenger ridership grows. More product and facility improvements are also being planned towards the year end.
